JOHANNESBURG - As Namibia gears up for its national elections, the country has its first-ever queer National Assembly candidate.
Kevin Wessels, a member of the Republican Party of Namibia, said he wants to challenge the status quo by advocating for policies that promote equality, opportunity, and dignity for all.
The elections are set for 27 November, when people in the country can cast their votes for their next president and National Assembly members.
As a young candidate, Wessels said he wants to champion diversity.
“My candidacy signals a shift towards a more inclusive and representative democracy in Namibia. It demonstrates that our political landscape is evolving to accommodate diverse perspectives and experiences. By running, I aim to show that marginalised groups can have a seat at the table and that meaningful change is possible when we engage and advocate from within political structures.”
