JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng standing committee on scrutiny of the subordinate legislature has called on schools to familiarise themselves with legislation governing school trips.
The committee conducted an oversight visit to Queensland Primary School to see if the school was following regulations set for school tours.
Earlier this year, a learner at the school drowned during a tour.
Two other learners also drowned while on a school outing.
Committee chairperson Mathidiso Mfikoe said that some schools did not even know of the rules.
"We found that some of the schools don't even have an idea of these regulations, which were promulgated in 2012. And they would, if they are properly implemented by our schools. No children must get injured or even lose life when they're on the trips."
