CAPE TOWN - The Bellville Regional Court has sentenced a 70-year-old UK man to eight years imprisonment after he was arrested in possession of crystal meth at Cape Town International Airport.
Because five years of his sentence were suspended for a period of five years, Matthew Swire will serve an effective three years behind bars.
Swire entered into a plea agreement with the State and has been in custody since his arrest on drug dealing charges, in June this year.
He was nabbed after the Hawks received information about a foreign national that was an alleged drug mule, leaving South Africa.
Hawks spokesperson, Siyabulela Vukubi: "The information was immediately operationalised. The suspect was spotted and upon searching his luggage, packets of tik was found in a hidden compartment. The team seized 4.1kg of tik to the value of R600,000."
