DA urges police ministry to adopt its 5-point plan to combat extortion

CAPE TOWN -The Democratic Alliance (DA) is urging the police ministry to adopt and implement the party’s plan to combat extortion.

The party presented its five-point plan on Thursday, focused on intelligence gathering and information sharing between the nine provinces and the private sector.

DA spokesperson Karabo Khakhau said they want to use intelligence-based operations to do away with extortion activities and dismantle criminal networks.

"We've given you a five-point plan on how to do so. The only thing that needs to happen is for this document not just be read but the police ministry to copy, paste it and roll it out and make sure that we fundamentally deal with this problem," Khakhau said.

However, the DA's spokesperson on police, Ian Cameron, acknowledged how some of their suggestions were already being considered.

"The first crucial intervention that we have proposed that I have already seen has influenced policy on a national level that's taken very seriously by the police, and is an opportunity brought to us by the GNU [Government of National Unity], is centralised intelligence gathering and analysis," said Cameron.

He said the second part of the DA policy is enhanced community reporting as well as the training of community liaison officers.
