CAPE TOWN - The Democratic Alliance (DA) said it had the perfect plan to help put an end to extortion in all sectors.
The party presented its five-point plan to the media in Parliament on Thursday, which focuses on intelligence gathering and more collaboration between different spheres of government.
The party said it would be handing over its plan to Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, urging him to implement the strategy.
DA police spokesperson, Ian Cameron, said it was high time that the South African Police Service placed a specific focus on extortion with the necessary urgency.
Cameron said that the growing organised crime phenomenon cuts through a number of sectors and requires a specialised team with an emphasis on intelligence gathering and analysis.
"The first part of this intervention that is critical to us, is to really capacitate the national anti-economical and extortion task team."
Cameron said that the plan also included enhanced community reporting and support mechanisms, targeted operations and disruption of syndicates, as well as improved prosecution and legal frameworks.
