JOHANNESBURG - Another child has died in Soweto after reportedly eating snacks bought from a spaza shop.

The five-year-old boy was taken to a clinic, where he died on Wednesday.

The case comes less than a week after President Cyril Ramaphosa announced measures to deal with food illnesses linked to items bought from spaza shops in recent weeks.

Many South Africans are furious that the interventions were announced after 22 children have died.

“According to reports, the child was vomiting and had a runny stomach before being taken to a local clinic where he was declared dead. The cause of death is unknown at this stage, pending autopsy results,” said Gauteng police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi.
