The retrospective curated by Nontobeko Ntombela thoroughly examines the life and creative output of Dr Mahlangu, a world-renowned icon.

It details her incredible journey from her modest upbringing in a small Mpumalanga village to fame and fortune.

She is one of the most significant artists of her era.

The show honours Dr Mahlangu's important contributions to and enduring influence on modern art through an extensive collection of archival materials spanning fifty years.

"Dr Mahlangu is a living example of overcoming hardship. Her pleasant demeanour and capacity to stimulate creativity have made her a matriarch and mentor in modern art, according to show organizer Nontobeko Ntombela, who was among the first South African and female African artists to receive international prominence. "

Her creative approach highlights Africa's rightful position at the forefront of the art world and continues to inspire younger generations."

One of the highlights of the retrospective exhibition is Dr Mahlangu's BMW 525i Art Car, a significant piece in the history of both art and automotive design.

Her 1991 creation of this renowned car was a landmark since it was the first piece by an African artist and a woman to be added to the esteemed BMW Art Car Collection.

After more than 30 years, it is returning to Gauteng.
