Safety, construction mafia, and security are the major topics at the National Construction Summit

CAPE TOWN - Growing safety concerns will be one of the main topics of discussion at the National Construction Summit which kicks off in Durban on Tuesday.

Public Works Minister Dean Macpherson and his finance and police counterparts Deputy Finance Minister David Masondo and Senzo Mchunu will address delegates attending this year.

The summit will also bring together government officials, industry leaders and law enforcement agencies to find a lasting solution to things like the construction mafia and project delays. 

The summit will be hosted by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) and will address the growing concerns surrounding safety, the construction mafia, security, and other criminal activity on construction sites.

Macpherson expressed his strong commitment to addressing crime on construction sites across the country. 

“This is a fulfilment of a promise I made shortly after taking office to host a summit to deal with construction site stoppages nationwide,” said Macpherson. 

Masondo will also reflect on the impact on investments in the country’s economy owing to delays, while Senzo Mchunu will reinforce the police's role in fighting crime in the sector. 

Other speakers will include the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal Thami Ntuli and eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba.
