JOHANNESBURG - Five suspects have been arrested for allegedly tampering with infrastructure on Johannesburg's N3 highway, resulting in motorists navigating parts of the road in darkness.

Residents of Lindokuhle Mguni informal settlement in Johannesburg spotted the five men on Tuesday morning, acting suspiciously.

They gave chase and notified authorities.

"Through the determination and collaboration, the community members pursued and ultimately caught the individuals, who were found in possession of a shovel, a pick, an iron rod and rolls of wire. The JMPD was promptly notified and upon arrival, officers arrested the suspects who are now facing charges of tampering with infrastructure," said the JMPD's Xolani Fihla.

The suspects are behind bars at a nearby police station.

Residents at the informal settlement claim that nearby communities have blamed them for rampant crime in the area.

But they hope that their actions on Tuesday affirm that the opposite, is true.
