CAPE TOWN - The Democratic Alliance (DA) said that Eskom's 36% electricity tariff application is outrageous and unjust.

Eskom wants to hike electricity prices by 36% from April next year.

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) is currently holding public hearings into the matter in Cape Town.

The DA protested outside the venue on Monday, calling on NERSA to reject Eskom's bidding.

"Citizens can't afford it, our growth rate is way too low, even at an inflation rate, it basically takes food off our table. We've seen the cost of living just rising over the last few years. In fact, it's Eskom's lack of power that's been a big driving force in why our economy is not growing and now they want to charge us for it. No," said Western Cape Premier Alan Winde.

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis said that a 36% increase would be unfair to most South Africans.

"Eskom has had more than 400% in tariff hikes over the last decade. When will it ever stop? Enough is enough."
