JOHANNESBURG - Transport Minister Barbara Creecy is set to launch the 2024 festive season road safety campaign in Tshwane on Sunday.
The launch falls on World Remembrance Day, just a few weeks ahead of the anticipated busy holiday period.
From December to early February, the country’s highways are anticipated to become significantly more dangerous as holidaymakers travel across the country to celebrate.
The campaign, which runs from December to mid-January, aims to reduce road accidents during the busy holiday period.
It will focus on drunk driving, pedestrian safety, and increased law enforcement on high-risk routes.
With traffic volumes expected to rise ahead of the festive season, authorities will intensify operations, targeting major roads and residential areas.
The event will also honour 69 traffic officers who died in the line of duty and pay tribute to lives lost on South African roads.
Creecy will be joined by provincial transport MECs, law enforcement officials, and family members in this solemn occasion.
