JOHANNESBURG - PSL chairperson Irvin Khoza celebrated the legacy of one of South African football’s visionaries, Kaizer Motaung, by presenting a generous gift of R2 million.

Motaung is the founder of Kaizer Chiefs and has built the club from being a group of players who broke away from Orlando Pirates in 1970, to becoming the most recognisable football brand in the country.

In addition to the success he’s achieved with his club, Motaung is also a founding member of the National Soccer League, which led to the unification of the country’s domestic football structure and paved the way for the creation of the modern PSL, which is now considered the richest league in Africa.

Khoza’s gift to Motaung is a further celebration of the icon, who recently celebrated his 80th birthday and a token of appreciation for his dedication and service to South African football and the sacrifices he’s made for the development of the sport in SA.

"Dr Kaizer Motaung has worked hard for himself. I know the pain and agony you went through to build an institution like Kaizer Chiefs and the NSL. May God bless you," Khoza said while offering the substantial present at the NSL Quadrennial General Meeting at the Sandton Convention Centre this week.

Motaung was moved by the tributes led by Khoza, who plays an adversarial role when their clubs, Chiefs and Pirates, clash but has worked together hand-in-hand on the NSL executive committee, to which both men were re-elected at the meeting.

"It was emotional because this has been an interesting journey. It’s been a long journey and of course, Dr Khoza and I have been on this journey trying to manoeuvre and going forward to see how best we can improve our football in this country," Motaung said.
