KZN govt to meet over rising food-borne illnesses

DURBAN – The KwaZulu-Natal provincial government is set to convene a special meeting on Friday to tackle food-borne illnesses.
This comes after the death of three children from the South Coast and hospitalisation of their grandmother.
Various municipal managers will meet KZN Premier Thami Ntuli and other government officials to develop solutions to prevent food poisoning incidents.
The provincial government and various municipalities across the province are set to draft by-laws to fight the issue of food-borne illness.
Over 50 school learners have been admitted so far due to alleged food poisoning allegedly brought from vendors.

"As the provincial executive council, we have convened municipalities to a special meeting to engage on the strategy we can use to address spaza shops compliance with the laws of our country," said Ntuli.
Ntuli said his government would make unannounced visits to stores owned by foreign nationals to enforce compliance.
