CAPE TOWN - Police have arrested two suspects in the Boland town of Wellington for the possession of abalone worth an estimated R7 million.
They were nabbed during an intelligence-driven operation after officers received a tip-off on Wednesday.
The police's Wesley Twigg explained: "The members received information of a truck that is loaded with abalone that is destined for Gauteng. The members operationalised the information and found the identified truck in the Wellington industrial area. The truck was searched and abalone weighing at 567.40 kilograms concealed in black bags were found in the truck."
Twigg said that further investigation led the officers to a Volkswagen Caddy, in which they found more abalone.
The suspects are expected to appear in the Wellington Magistrates Court on Friday.
