CAPE TOWN - Police in the Western Cape have their hands full, as crimes like gang violence continue unabated, in a number of communities.

Officers have been deployed to the Delft area to continue the fight against gang violence, extortion and robberies.

Several murders have been reported in that community in recent weeks and among those wounded are a 14-year-old boy and 13-year-old girl, shot in separate incidents.

The police's Wesley Twigg said that SAPS members arrested a man in possession of a firearm and ammunition in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

"The members were busy with foot patrols in Rossin Street, Delft when they noticed a unknown man walking in their direction and when he saw the police members he changed direction. The members chased after him and apprehended and searched him. They found a 9mm pistol with eight rounds of ammunition in his possession."

At the same time, a suspect was arrested in Atlantis, after he was found in possession of an imitation firearm and ammunition.

That community has too, been plagued by violent crime.

In October, five people were killed and another five wounded in a mass shooting that's under investigation by the police's Anti-Gang Unit.
