CAPE TOWN - International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola says hosting the G20 programme next year is likely to cost more than the almost R700 million currently budgeted.
But he said the benefits to the country will far outweigh the costs involved. South Africa will officially assume the presidency from Brazil in December.
Lamola said hosting the G20 is a mammoth undertaking for the country.
But he said the government has been working in earnest to be ready.

"Our intention is very clear, that we should showcase the best of South Africa, firstly in terms of tourism but also in terms of the issues that may be discussed," said Lamola.
Over 200 meetings are expected to be held over the next year, with at least 130 of them to take place in venues across the country.
Lamola said while it’s hoped more sponsorships and private sector support will come on board, the cost to the taxpayer is expected to grow.
"Whatever budget we will have to spend, the value for the country will be immense in terms of tourism, in terms of technological capabilities, in terms of the benefits for the country will be far-reaching," he said.
G20 leaders will meet in Rio de Janeiro next week.
