CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town's safety and security directorate has confirmed that five foreign nationals people have been arrested for running an illegal food manufacturing operation in the Mfuleni township near Cape Town.
When the city law enforcement and police officers raided the premises earlier, they discovered sausage being processed and packaged in unsanitary conditions.
It's alleged that meal bone, which is used in pet food, was being used in the manufacture of the sausage.
City Safety and Security MMC JP Smith said that forensics experts were processing the confiscated food samples and contents for further testing.
"After a tragic series of events across South Africa that claimed the lives of several children, it was recently discovered that food consumed by the victims had been contaminated with rat poison. This drew the urgent need of the authorities to focus on the increasing manner in which such food products are manufactured and sold often at discounted margins."
