Hanware told the court he became a paymaster for Modack's operation while he was behind bars between March 2017 and February 2018.
He said he used R1.2 million rand of his own money to pay wages on behalf of Modack.
Hanware said when Modack was released from prison, he refused to pay him back.
He said he then hatched a plot to get his money back by telling Modack he could influence top cops Jeremy Vearey and Charl Kinnear with bribes to have six firearms seized from his home returned.
Financial records show Modack paid R150,000 to Hanware, but the money never got to Vearey or Kinnear.
