DURBAN - The South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) in KwaZulu-Natal says the education department isn’t abiding by the norms and standards for school funding.

The union has held pickets at education district offices across the province for the past eight days, demanding that monies be paid in line with these guidelines.

SADTU's PEC briefed the media in Durban on Tuesday afternoon.

"Firstly, the KZN Department of Education failed to pay financial allocations to these needy schools. Schools have been struggling, with school principals having to use their own monies to run schools, which is unsustainable," said provincial secretary, Nomarashiya Caluza.

Nomarashiya said that while over R100 million had now been paid, there was still about R600 million outstanding.

She added that schools could not function properly without these funds.

"Schools need this money to buy textbooks and stationery, they need to honour municipal bills and other resources and services which they must procure."
