In a statement, Morero said Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC) Councillor Tebogo Nkonkou will replace Gwamanda.
"The decision to discharge Gwamanda is effective immediately and aims to ensure that the city’s service delivery remains uninterrupted and continues to meet the needs of its residents."
The mayor is confident that Nkonkou will lead the department with dedication.
He added that the City of Johannesburg is committed to delivering quality services to residents.
Al-JAMA-AH FROWNS UPON MORERO
Al Jama-ah says City of Joburg Mayor Dada Morero acted “unilaterally” and in “bad faith” by removing Gwamanda from his mayoral committee.
Al Jama-ah's Gauteng leader, Thapelo Amad, believes the party was blindsided by the decision, adding that coalition partners were still discussing the matter at the provincial level.
“However there were never further consultations between us and the ANC because matters were still being ventilated so we hadn’t concluded that process.
“I think the executive mayor, in his powers, has taken a unilateral decision however I think he was supposed to have waited for the outcome of the process and the outcome of the NPA (National Prosecuting Authority),” said Amad.
