JOHANNESBURG - The Hawks in the Eastern Cape is urging local businesses to remain vigilant, and guard against fraud attempts.
This after the Directorate's Commercial Crime Investigation unit arrested a 41-year-old for alleged speed point fraud worth over R1 million.
Eastern Cape Hawks Spokesperson Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana said that the suspect was traced, and found, at his hideout in East London.
"It is alleged that the complainant, a Tsomo Hotel owner was approached by someone who introduced himself as an employee of Yoco technology (pty) LTD. The suspects are reported to have sold three (3) speed point machines for R3500 to the complainant."
Mhlakuvana said that the victim later opened a case of fraud.
"It is further alleged that after a few months of using these speed point machines, the complainant realised that the sales money was not going into their business account and decided to open a case of fraud with the Hawks."
The suspect is expected to appear in the Mthatha Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Monday.
