JOHANNESBURG - The City of Joburg is set to meet with the “top six” taxi associations to conclude a longstanding dispute related to overdue payments for operators.

The disgruntled associations marched to Mayor Dada Morero’s office last month, demanding payments for giving up the use of its vehicles and permits to allow Rea Vaya buses on their routes.

Taxi owners claim they were promised more than R800,000 for each taxi, an amount calculated based on an estimate of how much each vehicle made per year.

The agreement established in 2011 was meant to create affordable, reliable and frequent public transport.

However, four years later the association says it began experiencing irregular payments from the city.

Joburg’s MMC for Community Development, Chris Vondo, says a meeting following last month’s march created a foundation for more discussions.

“We can confirm that the meeting was very fruitful and cordial, both parties agreed that there will be a follow-up meeting regarding the issues they have raised in their memorandum.

“We can confirm that the meeting will indeed take place to locate the issues that have been raised so that there can be an amicable solution to the issues that the Top Six have raised”
