DURBAN - The South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) has asked President Cyril Ramaphosa to intervene on the issue of safety and security at KwaZulu-Natal schools.
Members of the union were part of the presidential imbizo that took place in Umgababa south of Durban.
They highlighted previous incidents where teachers were attacked, shot and killed at schools.
"Safety and security must be guaranteed by the Department of Education," said the union’s provincial secretary Nomarashiya Caluza.
Caluza said extortionists had also been taking advantage of teachers while on duty.
"We have seen cases or incidents where teachers are attacked by criminals coming with speed points for teachers to send them money."
