CoJ exploring legal options to fight Eskom from cutting electricity supply
On Wednesday, Eskom issued a notice of intention to interrupt power supply because of a R4.9 billion debt.
JOHANNESBURG - The City of Johannesburg says it’s exploring legal options to fight Eskom from cutting electricity supply in the metro.
On Wednesday, Eskom issued a notice of intention to interrupt power supply because of a R4.9 billion debt.
It said an additional R1.4 million would also be payable at the end of November.
The City of Joburg has given Eskom five days to retract its public notice.

The utility said despite all avenues that it explored and efforts to accommodate the city, the matter has reached a point where it can no longer afford to accommodate the city without putting further strain on and harming its own business.
However, the city said this move by Eskom is unjust, counterproductive and potentially harmful to the residents and businesses of Johannesburg.
It’s shot down Eskom’s claims on the debt saying there are ongoing disputes regarding overbilling of R3.4 billion, with a pending appeal and monthly declarations since July 2024.
While Eskom said it will make its final decision next week, the city has urged Eskom to reassess its stance and for both parties to find a mutually beneficial resolution.
