Lester Kiewit spoke to Joshua Horwitz of the family-run Sydney butcher and grill, Field To Fork.
Listen below.
Yes, Vegemite biltong is a thing in Australia...
Field to Fork prides itself in sourcing the best grass-fed, free-range, hormone and antibiotic-free meat directly from its farm.
The family-owned business was founded by Horwitz's parents Gary and Paula, who are South African. It serves Sydney’s South African expat community and is becoming a popular choice for health-conscious Aussies and fitness enthusiasts.
Horwitz learned biltong-making from his late grandfather, and now runs the business with his brother Sam, expanding to four retail stores in Sydney's eastern suburbs.
Now, the family-run business is making waves online by bringing a taste of South Africa to Australia with Vegemite biltong.
If you didn't know, Aussies love Vegemite as much as South Africans love biltong or a tjoppie on the braai.
Horwitz is providing them with a variant of biltong by flavouring some dried meat with the iconic flavour of Vegemite for an 'Afra-Stralian' take on two iconic flavours.
Here's how they do it:
Of course, this one sent biltong purists in South Africa into a frenzy with some social media users asking, "Why would you do this?"
Horwitz says they've never got backlash like this before until videos made their rounds on TikTok in South Africa.
"I'm thinking of doubling down and making some beer-infused biltong... this is the first time something's blown up like this," says Horwitz.
