CAPE TOWN - Six hundred e-bike riders have demonstrated how the mode of transport can relieve the inner city commute in Cape Town.
Thursday's Ride4Change event coincided with Earthshot Week, an eco initiative hosted by Britain's Prince William.
Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis also joined the "Green Riders", who were 2024 Earthshot Prize nominees, on a cycle from Langa to the Silo District.
Green Riders founder, Craig Atkinson, said they were demonstrating their work in eco-travel and micro-mobility.
"We wanted to make a difference, we wanted to de-carbonise the last mile. The most importnant piece for me was to create the job opportunities for our youth in a country where the unemployment rate is so bad. We are partnered with Mr D and Takealot, we also partnered with UberEats... we want to create 50,000 jobs, which is a huge number and that is realistically what we could do over a couple years but I would feel happy if we get to the 4,000 mark."
