Modack and 14 co-accused face 122 charges for various crimes related to running a criminal enterprise.
Anwar Gallie said he helped Modack take over the security at Cape Town's nightclubs in 2017.
He told the court that Lifman, who was shot dead in George on Sunday, was in control of security at nightclubs in the CBD at the time.
Gallie said he represented TSG Security, which was owned by alleged gang leader, Colin Booysen, of which Modack was a silent partner.
"Ninety-nine percent of all the clubs we signed up because they were already on the books of TSG. We just made it clear that there was no space for Andre Naude and Mark Lifman."
Gallie said Modack offered the bouncers at the clubs better wages and drugs were no longer allowed to be sold in the clubs.
