Six months later, investigations into deadly George building collapse yet to be finalised

GEORGE - Investigations into the cause of the building collapse in George have not been finalised, six months after the tragic incident.
In May, 34 construction workers were killed when an unfinished apartment building caved in.
In June, the engineer responsible for the George project, Athol Mitchell, was put on precautionary suspension by the Engineering Council of South Africa.
A gaping hole remains here at the site where a five-storey apartment block was to be erected at 75 Victoria Road.

Wednesday marks exactly six months since the tragedy occurred.
Sixty-two workers were on site when the implosion happened, this led to a rescue and recovery operation which lasted 11 days.
Investigations by the Labour Department, the Engineering Council of South Africa, as well as the police, into the cause of the collapse have yet to wrap up.
In September, Western Cape Premier Alan Winde said the provincial government’s probe was making progress.
