CAPE TOWN - The minibus taxi task team convened for its last sitting of the calendar year on Tuesday.
This is where new projects designed to benefit both commuters and the minibus taxi industry were tabled.
This includes the city's new transport regulations Whatsapp channel, which streamlines communication with Cape Town's public transport industry.
Minibus and metred taxi operators can use the WhatsApp number to confirm their operational status, report route conflicts or invasions and schedule meetings with the branch, among others.
The task team was launched in 2023, in the wake of violent taxi protests, and comprises representatives from the Western Cape Government, the City of Cape Town and the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco).
City Mayco Member for Urban Mobility, Rob Quintas:
"Another project presented was the proposed plans for Strategic Public transport priority lanes along the N2 outbound from the Cape Town CBD to Jakes Gerwel.
"The lanes will be for exclusive use by public transport vehicles, including Golden Arrow and MyCiTi buses as well as minibus taxis. This is a joint undertaking between the City and WCG, and the concept design is scheduled to commence in February 2025."
