Matric exams progressing well, says Basic Education Minister Gwarube

JOHANNESBURG - Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube said that the matric exams were progressing well, with only a few incidents.
These included storms and flooding in parts of the Eastern Cape, protests in Limpopo, and five learners who were raped also in the Eastern Cape.

The minister was addressing a media briefing in Parliament on the progress of the National Senior Certificate exams, exactly 12 days since they started.
"Five grade 12 learners were subjected to horrific acts of violence. I want to express my deepest sadness for what these young people have endured."
She said that one learner was caught on the wrong side of the law and arrested.
"There was one learner who could not finish their paper as they were arrested inside the exam venue as a suspect in an armed robbery case."
Gwarube said that to date, 104 of the 181 question papers had been written, representing 58% of exams.
