GEORGE - Western Cape Police Commissioner Thembisile Patekile said he hopes the murder of alleged underworld figure, Mark Lifman, won't spark a war on the streets of Cape Town.

The controversial businessman was shot and killed outside a shopping mall in George on Sunday. In the past several years he has been linked to the Cape's underworld, which he has denied.

His alleged attackers were arrested and appeared in the local magistrates court on Tuesday.

There are fears that the assassination of Lifman might lead to blood spilled in the Western Cape's underworld.

Patekile said they'd keep a close eye on the situation.

"We are upping our game on all fronts with our intelligence gathering and also requesting the members to be also vigilant and inform us of anything because we wouldn't want to lose any person."

The provincial police commissioner added that the motive for the murder was still unclear at this stage.

Patekile said they can't rule out more arrests in this matter.

"In cases like these, my experience tells me that it does not normally end with one or two people. So we will keep that open, that it could lead to more arrests. We don't know but the investigation will lead us."

The accused will be back in court next week Wednesday.
