SAPS encourages Mozambique's opposition leader, Venancio Mondlane to open a case
In a Facebook live broadcast on Monday night, Mondlane told viewers that he escaped an assassination attempt in South Africa where he is in hiding after challenging last month's election results.

JOHANNESBURG - South African police have encouraged Mozambique's leading opposition leader, Venancio Mondlane to open a case after he claimed there was an assassination attempt on his life.
Mondlana said that he had been hiding in South Africa, after escaping his country where he challenged last month's election which was won by the Frelimo Party.
Police Spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said that they have no record of Mondlane's claims.
"We checked with the Sandton Police Station and there is no record of a case that's been registered.
We advise and request the leader to come forward with a statement so that we can open a case and an investigation can be conducted."
Meanwhile International Relations Department spokesperson Chrispin Phiri said that it has no knowledge of Mondlana's presence in the country.

However, the SA government said that it does not know of Mondlane's presence in the country or an attempt on his life.
Phiri said, "We would be informed via the High Commission or an embassy that an eminent person is coming to South Africa and where necessary the government would even extend certain courtesies to officials of a particular government of eminent persons where necessary."
