JOHANNESBURG - The National Prosecuting Authority has welcomed the court appearance of a prosecutor and two police officers on corruption and extortion charges totaling R400,000.

Advocate Avinash Ramapararat, along with Sergeant Herman Mnguni and Constable Abdul Shaik, appeared on Friday before the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Pretoria.

The three are accused of demanding money from a businessman who was arrested on fraud charges in June.

Following a sting operation, the police officers were arrested last week, while Ramapararat was detained on Thursday.

Friday's bail hearing was unopposed and all three remain in custody until the bail ruling on 4 November.

NPA spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said: "Investigations by the national anti-corruption investigations unit head office detective led to the arrest of the three in court the matter was postponed to the 4th of November for bail judgment. The three are reminded in custody. The NPA is committed to fighting corruption at all levels including within its own ranks."
