CAPE TOWN - A first-of-its-kind junior traffic training centre has been launched for children with special needs in the Western Cape.

It's part of the province's endeavours to reduce preventable child fatalities on the roads.

Data from the Road Traffic Management Corporation reveals that pedestrian fatalities rose to 45 percent in 2023, and children aged 0-14 represent 10% of these cases.

The provincial mobility department said the training centre would equip learners with skills for navigating roads safely.

"As the Western Cape Government, we are committed to creating safer roads and ensuring that every child, regardless of their abilities, can navigate our roads safely and confidently. The launch of this Junior Traffic Training Centre is a proud and necessary milestone for us."
