CAPE TOWN - Non-Profit Organisation (NPO), Save Our Schools (SOS) says it has come up with a first-of-its-kind project to eradicate illegal pit toilets across the country.

It is using shipping containers to create modern and hygienic facilities.

The NPO said the project is set to transform people's lives by providing access to safe and hygienic sanitation facilities.

Many schools and informal settlements in South Africa still rely on pit toilets, posing significant health risks.

The organisation's CEO Shelley Humphreys said by creating flushing toilets, they want to improve the health, dignity, and safety of communities, particularly children and women.

"So what we are ensuring is that within the 'Wash Hub' themselves we will be having solar panels on the roofs. That solar panel will obviously be used to generate light so that women and children that need to use a toilet at night can feel a bit safer," said Humphreys.

The WASH Hub, which consists of 12 flushing toilet cubicles for women and men, will be piloted in Makause, a dense informal community near Primrose in Germiston, Gauteng.
