CAPE TOWN - The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Eastern Cape says it supports Friday's Special Investigating Unit (SIU) raid at the Makana Local Municipality offices.
For years, residents of Makhanda and surrounding areas have complained of rampant corruption and poor service delivery in the municipality.
The municipality has experienced frequent water outages and sewage spills, despite millions of rands being spent on a bulk water project in the region.
The SIU is also investigating several allegedly fraudulent tenders worth millions of rands.
The DA's Vicky Knoetze said this is the beginning of the end for the municipality's culture of corruption.
"Institutions like Rhodes University have even had to suspend academic programmes due to a water shortage just a few weeks ago. The people of Makana deserve better."
