CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Education MEC David Maynier said he was disappointed that the finance minister's budget did not provide additional money to provincial education departments.
The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has been calling for additional funds to cover a shortfall of more than R3 billion in the next three years for teachers' salaries.
The department said that without this, class sizes would increase and negatively affect learning outcomes.
However, Maynier said it was not all bad news: "We welcome the confirmation of our department’s additional funding from the Budget Facility for Infrastructure, which must be spent to build the new schools that are urgently needed in the Western Cape. We look forward to further engagements with the National Treasury regarding the fiscal emergency and its impact on provincial education departments across South Africa."
