DURBAN - Police on Thursday brought the Durban CBD, in KwaZulu-Natal, to a standstill as they raided various stores in the city centre.

Police say they are curbing the illicit trade in the economic hub.

The raids are targeting shops believed to be selling counterfeit goods among other illegal items.

The police’s illicit goods unit consisting of a team from the police headquarters in Pretoria carried out the raids.

Eyewitness News was called into one of the hidden storages where counterfeit goods of luxury brands were recovered.

On Tuesday, around 36 foreign nationals were arrested when authorities raided stores selling expired food in the Durban CBD.

South African Police Service insiders have told Eyewitness News that the raids will continue in parts of the province in the coming days as police tighten regulations.
