CAPE TOWN - The South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU)'s General Secretary - Zwelinzima Vavi - says they have no faith in Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana heeding their call for a progressive budget.

Several trade unions and civil society organisations took their grievances to Parliament's doorsteps where the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement is being tabled.

Some of their demands include scrapping budget cuts, job creation, and implementing the basic income grant.

However, Vavi says he doesn't trust that their demands will be entertained in the budget.

"You can't serve a lion and sheep in the same kraal at the same time, the lion lives by eating sheep and goats. That is what the government is doing. It is serving the interests of the lion and it is allowing the lions to devour the sheep. You can't address unemployment with an economic structure that remains colonial."
