JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng top cop Shadrack Sibiya said he’s open to taking on the mantle of Hawks head, should the opportunity present itself.
This, as the term for the current Hawks head, Godfrey Lebeya, is set to come to an end in May 2025.
Lebeya was appointed head of the Hawks in 2018.
Sources close to EWN claim that Sibiya is being tipped to take on the post of Hawks head.
Sibiya previously headed the Hawks in Gauteng and was the head of forensics at the City of Johannesburg under the helm of former mayor, Herman Mashaba.
Speaking to EWN on Monday, Sibiya addressed the rumours.
“It’s the prerogative of the minister, maybe in consultation with the president, but I’m also not aware that my name has been thrown in the ring, but I wouldn’t mind.”
Sibiya, who has been in charge of the country’s detectives since 2023, is seen to have made inroads, as explained by National Police Commissioner Fanie Masemola.
“In comparison to the 2023/2024 annual report, our detectives’ performance has improved.”
Almost 80,000 people were convicted during this period through police detective work.
