JOHANNESBURG - South Africans are in for a few days of intense weather as a powerful spring storm is set to bring strong winds, heavy rain, and an unexpected chill to much of the country.

The South African Weather Service has warned that the system will make landfall in the western regions of the country on Sunday before moving east and exiting the country by Tuesday.

Gale-force winds are anticipated in the Cape provinces, reaching up to 65 kilometres an hour, while gusts of 50 kilometres are forecast for Gauteng, North-West, the Free State, and parts of KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday.

With these strong winds, informal and formal settlements could face potential damage, and major transport routes, including the N1 and N3 highways, are expected to be impacted.

Drivers are advised to take extra caution as conditions may lead to fallen trees, blowing dust, and poor visibility.

The Weather Service is urging South Africans to prepare for possible disruptions, including challenging driving conditions and localised flooding in some areas.

The cold front is likely to remind residents of winter’s chill, bringing unseasonably cold weather just as South Africans were beginning to enjoy the warmth of spring.
