CAPE TOWN - The Association for the Advancement of Wilgenhof Residents said that the Stellenbosch University's council caused uncertainty and treated Wilgenhof residents unfairly when it decided to close the controversial residence.
The association, which consists of parents and loved ones of current residents, turned to the courts after the university council decided to close the residence for refurbishment in 2025.
This after disturbing items, related to previous initiation ceremonies and alleged racism, were found in its archives.
A court agreement was reached on Wednesday for Wilgenhof students to move to a new residence together and return to Wilgenhof when the refurbishments were complete.
Association spokesperson, Noelani King: "We are very pleased that our sons will be able to stay together with their Wilgenhof friends and support network in 2025, and that the welcoming and inclusive community they created will be shared by new first-year students next year."
