JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC)'s national executive committee (NEC) will begin its four-day meeting at the Birchwood Hotel in Ekurhuleni on Friday.

This marks the first NEC gathering since the decision to establish a Government of National Unity (GNU) following the 29 May elections.

Several items are on the agenda for Friday's meeting of the party's highest decision-making body.

During the last ANC NEC meeting, the party's highest decision-making body gathered to discuss its options after losing its parliamentary majority in the general elections.

It was at this meeting where party president, Cyril Ramaphosa, invited all interested political parties to join its GNU.

Now that government is up and running, the ANC NEC is expected to turn its attention to the numerous socio-economic issues still affecting South Africans.

Political instability at the local government level in recent years is expected to be a key focus during this four-day NEC meeting.

The party is set to update its plans to improve municipal performance and ensure consistent access to running water.

Additionally, the NEC is expected to address corruption in state institutions, defend the achievements of democracy, and protect the country's borders.

The meeting is set to conclude with a visit to Wattville cemetery in Benoni, to honour the legacy of the party's former president, Oliver Tambo.
