The latest vehicle crime statistics paint a harrowing picture.
Hijackings remain a significant concern, judging by Tracker’s latest Vehicle Crime Index for January to June 20024.
About 58% of nationwide vehicle crime incidents (theft and hijacking) occur in Gauteng.
“At the moment, theft in Gauteng is greater than hijacking, most likely due to syndicates using keyless entry relay attacks to steal vehicles.”
Eldorado Park, Ivory Park and Moroka were identified as hotspots.
In KwaZulu-Natal, Marianhill and Umlazi were highlighted as hot spots.
In the Western Cape, Delt, Nyanga and Phillipi East show the most hijacking activity.
Tracker says vehicles are commonly reported hijacked on Friday between 4 pm and 8 pm.
Theft is mainly reported on Saturdays between 11 am and 3 pm.
As for which vehicles criminals are targeting, Toyota and Volkswagen remain specifically vulnerable due to their popularity.
