CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town says it will continue to impound taxis when they break the law.
SANTACO in the Western Cape has accused the metro of targeting minibus taxi operators with impoundments and other penalties.
City traffic authorities have confirmed it impounded more than 600 taxis in July.
The City of Cape Town says it's inundated with complaints from residents about minibus taxi behaviour on the roads.
City traffic police say it's compelled to act when the rules of the road are violated.
But taxi bosses believe operators are being unfairly targeted.
SANTACO in the Western Cape alleges that more than 1,300 of their vehicles were confiscated by local authorities in July alone.
City bosses, though, say that 609 taxis were impounded for various offences.
The metro maintains that law enforcers are acting within the agreed terms of the Minibus Taxi Task Team, rules that taxi industry bosses helped create.
