Morero stated that the seriousness of the fraud allegations against his predecessor, Gwamanda, necessitated a proactive response to safeguard the city’s reputation.
Initially, Morero proposed that Gwamanda resign from his position as community development MMC but ultimately decided to place him on special leave following their meeting on Tuesday.
City of Joburg mayoral spokesperson, Chris Vondo, emphasised that any behavior that undermined public trust would be addressed accordingly.
"Councillors in the City of Joburg are guided by a code of ethics and code of conduct, which is something that they do take seriously. So there all these kind of legalities that you look at in terms of how you process these matters."
Morero is expected to announce a candidate to act in Gwamanda's position during his special leave.
