JOHANNESBURG - The political management committee in Johannesburg is set to meet on Tuesday, to discuss the fraud charges against former mayor, Kabelo Gwamanda.
This is a committee comprising all parties in the African National Congress (ANC)-led municipal government, including the Economic Freedom Fighters, the Patriotic Alliance and minority parties.
Eyewitness News understands that amongst the agenda points is the possible removal of Gwamanda from his position as Community Development MMC.
This after Gwamanda’s arrest on Friday after running a funeral insurance scheme that allegedly defrauded Soweto residents.
Gwamanda also met with Mayor Dada Morero to address the fraud charges against him.
Morero is one of those pressing for Gwamanda's resignation, citing significant concerns about the allegations he faces.
It’s understood the ANC intends to propose Gwamanda's recall during Tuesday’s discussions with coalition partners.
The meeting will also explore Gwamanda’s potential replacement, who is expected to be a candidate from the Al Jama-ah party.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance said there was a possibility the ANC and coalition partners knew about Gwamanda’s fraud allegations before deploying him to government.
