JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance (DA) said it is hopeful that through the Government of National Unity (GNU)'s dispute resolution panel, it can get President Cyril Ramaphosa to amend the Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) Act.
In September, Ramaphosa signed the BELA Bill into law, but he deferred the implementation of two clauses for three months to allow public consultation.

The clauses deal with school language and admission policies.
DA national spokesperson, Willie Aucamp, said the party had raised its dispute regarding BELA in the panel.
"We cannot take away the rights of parents to decide what is in the best interest of the children and give that right now to a departmental head in a province — that will not work. With regards to the clearinghouse, we in the Democratic Alliance give our full cooperation, and we hope and believe that all other parties will also come to the clearinghouse or technical committee with an open mind."
