DURBAN - There are calls for food sold by street vendors to be inspected after 22 school children fell ill in KwaZulu-Natal after eating snacks.

The pupils from Ngaqa Primary School in Mtubatuba were taken to hospital on Monday, suffering from stomach pain.

Last week, primary school pupils were admitted to a hospital in Bronkhorstspruit after eating snacks they bought from a street vendor.

Earlier in October, six Soweto children died in a suspected poisoning case.

The Democratic Alliance (DA)'s Sakhile Mngadi said that businesspeople found on the wrong side of the law must be arrested.

"We must ensure proper law enforcement so that we can protect our children from what is a growing crisis that has led to the death of children."
