CAPE TOWN - President Cyril Ramaphosa says the Department of Basic Education (DBE) has “stringent conditions” to minimise cheating during matric final exams.

All systems are in place to ensure this year’s exam period goes smoothly, said Ramaphosa.

In his latest newsletter, Ramaphosa also commended the country’s educators for their commitment to the class of 2024 matrics as they end their school journey.

Monday marks the start of the National Senior Certificate exams with just over 880,000 candidates writing.

While matric exams have run smoothly for decades, Ramaphosa says the DBE has put stringent conditions in place to minimise the potential for “question paper leaks, fraud and cheating”.

Ramaphosa said additional invigilators have also been appointed and some examination centres will employ surveillance cameras.

He says security has been stepped up at exam venues to minimise disruptions.

Ramaphosa also noted how the class of 2024 entered grade 8 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and have had to receive “considerable learning support” to overcome the gaps in their learning.

He again called on employers to relax the requirement of prior work experience, particularly for entry-level positions where young employees can be trained on the job.
